Ответ басконки мне,оказывается иметь баскское происхождение мало- баскоязычность первостепенна.
That’s your opinion and we respect it. We’re glad you became interested in Basque people and culture because of her video.
However, here in Euskal Herria, the ethnic thing doesn’t work like it does in the USA or other places. We’ve said it before and we’ll repeat: we give the name euskaldun not to a person born in Euskal Herria, or to a person with Basque parents, but to a person that can speak our language. That’s what unites us. Euskal Herria literally means “the people of Basque language”.
So of course, we agree it’s not her fault to be assimilated, but she had options. She could have studied Basque not because she wanted to sell records, but because she wanted to recover her people’s language. Itziar Ituño - actress known for her work in tv show Money Heist - did this: her parents couldn’t speak Basque and she was taught in Spanish, but made the effort of mastering Euskara and voluntarily turning it into her first language for her everyday life because she felt Basque and that was a lacking part of her identity.
With this we’re not saying what Anne Etchegoyen should have done or do, we just say that people do this kind of things all the time. Because they’re truly interested, because they want to feel 100% Basque, because their parents were denied the option of learning our language, because their kids are studying in Basque and want to help them with their homework, because they want to honor their grandpas who had to speak Basque just in whispers, because thousands of Basque people made an effort to save our traditional songs for the next generation, despite all assimilation.
There are many reasons and many many many options and resources to learn.
So, personally, yes, it was hypocritical of Anne Etchegoyen to just start learning Euskara AFTER all the backlash and not PRIOR to. She did it for her image, not because she felt she should, because if that was the case, she sure would have done it before, right? Especially when she was interested in making Basque traditional songs more well known in France.
Just our two cents.
