May 24th, Day of Slavic script and Bulgarian education and culture
Monday, Bulgaria marks May 24th, the Day of the Slavic script and the Bulgarian education and culture. On this day Bulgarians revere the memory of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, equal to the Apostles, who created the Slavic alphabet, and excelled as missionaries, church organizers, philosophers and men of letters during the second half of the 9th century. Cyril and Methodius incorporated into Christian culture the millions of Slavs, enlarging thus their spiritual horizons and defining for millennia ahead the destiny of Europe and the world. In 1980 Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe. On May 24th a procession took place in Sofia, in which President Georgi Parvanov, National Assembly Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva, ministers and citizens took part. The procession ended in an official ceremony in front of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius National Library. Priests from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church read a solemn liturgy. The holiday was traditionally marked by processions of students all over the country.
