Serbian culture refers to the culture of Serbia as well as the culture of Serbs in other parts of the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere in the world. It has a strong influence from the peasantry especially in its arts, crafts and music. The nearby Byzantine Empire had a strong influence in the Middle Ages while the Serb Orthodox Church has had an enduring influence. The Serbian (Byzantine) culture was weakened during more than three centuries of rule under the Ottoman Empire, nevertheless, It was influenced greatly in Music. At the same time flourishing during the rule of Habsburg Empire and Republic of Venice in the Adriatic sea. Following autonomy and eventual independence in the mid 19th century, Serbian culture could be restrengthened in the people. Socialist Realism was predominant in official art during the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia but recent decades have seen a growing influence from Western and traditional Serbian art.

Serbian traditions:
Kolo, (dance)Circle, elementary figure in old & traditional Serbian folkdances. Kolo has his name, givenn by personal name of composer, name of region, or by flower (for example: Neven Kolo[1], Veliko Bačko Kolo Great Kolo from Bačka), Draganovo Kolo(Dragan's Kolo), Kolo Pašona, Medeno Kolo(Honey Kolo), Užičko Kolo(Užice town Kolo), Kolo Čačak, etc....).

Kolo (Serbian Cyrillic: Коло) is a collective folk dance, danced by Serbs, where a group of people (usually several dozen, at the very least three) holding each other by the hands or around the waist dance, ideally in a circle, hence the name. There is almost no movement above the waist. The basic steps are easy to learn, but experienced dancers dance kolo with great virtuosity due to different ornamental elements they add, such as syncopated steps. Each region has at least one unique kolo; it is difficult to master and even most experienced dancers cannot master all of them.

The dance is accompanied by instrumental two-beat music with the same name, made most often with an accordion, but also with other instruments: frula (traditional kind of a recorder), tamburica, or sargija. This dance is probably an influence from the Celtic tribes who settled in the Balkans a couple centuries B.C.

Serbian Gusle



The Serbian gusle (pluralia tantum) has one or two strings and is also usually made of maple wood.
There are records of gusle (гоусли) being played in the court of King Stephen the First-Crowned (early 12th c.) but it is not certain whether the term was used to specifically denote the gusle or perhaps some kind of string instrument. The first mention of gusle in its contemporary meaning of the term relates to 1415 when Serb gusle players were performing at the court of Polish king Wladislav Jagelo.[citation needed] The Polish poet Miaskowsky from early 17th c. was also familiar with "Serb gusle" (serbskie skrzypki) which he considers a specific instrument, different from the similar string instruments found in Poland at the time.[citation needed]

Guslars (singers) are individuals capable of reproducing long narrative texts about heroes and events from the distant past and are able to improvise new ones in the decasyllabic metre (десетерац/deseterac).

The gusle has played a significant role in the history of Serbian epic poetry because of its association with the centuries old patriotic oral legacy unti. Most of the epics are about the era of Ottoman Turkish rule and struggle for self determination. With the efforts of ethnographer Vuk Stefanović Karadžić many of these epics were collected and preserved early in the nineteenth century.

О српским гајдама



Gajde se sastoje od nekoliko elemenata: Gajdenica deo koji daje zvuk, ima rupe gde svirač prebira prstima i kroji melodiju sa ukrasima. Broj rupa se kreće između 6 i 8. Gajdenica se pravi od tvrdog drveta. Najčešće su to šimšir ili zelenika, dren, jorgovan i šljiva. Na vrhu gajdenice nalazi se krivi završetak koji se nekada pravio isključivo od bivoljeg ili drugog roga. Sa vrha ovog dela na uzici od kože visi zub od vuka, divlje svinje ili medveda...ili kandža orla ili sokola. Onaj ko nije mogao da nabavi ništa od ovoga stavljao je kandžu od petla stambolca. Ovaj oštri predmet služi kao amajlija, ujedno i kao alat kojim su se doterivale rupe kada su štimovane pomoću pčelinjeg voska (veličina rupe se sužavala kapanjem pčelinjeg voska). Pisak se nalazi u spoju između mešine i gajdenice. Vibracijom njegovog jezička dobija se zvuk. Pisak se pravi trske ili od mladica zove. Pisak se nakratko uroni u vrelo ulje kako bi se zaštitio od vlage. Svi prstenovi u koje se uglavljuju drveni delovi, kada se spajaju sa mešinom, zovu se glavčine i prave se od kravljeg roga.
Drveni deo u koji se duva ima povratni ventil, sa klapn om od parčeta kože, a u novije vreme od gume. Velika dugačka cev koja daje dubok (bas) ton takođe ima svoj veliki pisak i zove se prdalo, ili drndalo. Sklapa se iz tri dela i pravi se od drena, šimšira ili zelenike. Mešina se pravi od kože jareta ili jagnjeta koja se suši, potapa u krečnu vodu i tako impregnira. Deo sa krznom okreće se unutra da drži vlagu i toplotu.
Mare je pevala. Izvorne, narodne pesme. Njen kristalno čist glas, zvuk gajdi i pesme: Tri livade nigde lada nema, Znas li "Docko" onu sljivu ranku, Kolenike, kolenike vreteno, Stojan i Ljiljana...i jos puno njih.
U vreme litija i goresnjaka krenuli bi od svoje kuće, pa od vrata do vrata. Docko bi odsvirao, Mare bi otpevala i za to bi dobili neku paru od domaćina, često i od nekog od gostiju. Bilo je veselih i dobrih domaćina u čijim dvorištima bi se često i kolo zaigralo. Bilo lepo vreme, uzivali smo svi. Obozavao sam da kad dodju kod nas zamolim baba Mare da mi otpeva omiljenu pesmu "cel noć Ljiljana sedela, devet je leba ispekla, desetu vitku banjicu"...
Pamtim to vreme do svoje 15. godine.
Onda je Mare umrla. Iznenada u snu, govorio je Docko "moja Mare zaspala". Bila je zima, tačno se sećam da je sneg napadao više od pola metra. Pamtim i tužnu povorku u kojoj je ispraćena. Zaprega sa dva vola vukla je kola u kojima je bio sanduk sa pokojnicom. A Docko...gotovo skamenjen sedeo je u kolima pored sanduka svirajući neku tužnu melodiju. Imao sam utisak da su gajde plakale sa njim. Kad je Mare sahranjena Docko je ostavio gajde.
Više ga nikad nisam čuo da duva u gajde.
